Has anybody had experience with male infertility secondary to diabetes?

My fiance and I have been trying to get pregnant for 12 months with no luck. He has type 1 diabetes that is poorly controlled. My Dr. said she has never heard of diabetes having anything to do with infertility, but plans to read more on the subject. Has anyone had personal experiences? Thanks!
It is poorly controlled. Yes I am aware this can cause kidney damage, amputation, etc. I’m a nurse in the operating room, TRUST me, I see this! This would in no change my mind about marrying him.. thanks though.
