Has anybody had experience with male infertility secondary to diabetes?
My fiance and I have been trying to get pregnant for 12 months with no luck. He has type 1 diabetes that is poorly controlled. My Dr. said she has never heard of diabetes having anything to do with infertility, but plans to read more on the subject. Has anyone had personal experiences? Thanks!
It is poorly controlled. Yes I am aware this can cause kidney damage, amputation, etc. I’m a nurse in the operating room, TRUST me, I see this! This would in no change my mind about marrying him.. thanks though.

There are a number of things that could be happening there. Diabetes can affect a number of key pieces along the way. I would suggest that you both talk to his nurse educator and see what can be worked out.
No personal experiences, both infertility can happen in type 1 diabetes. I’m a pharmacist, and if diabetes is not controlled it can cause all sorts of complications such as kidney disease, visual impairments, nerve damage, infertility, and heart complications.
Has he been measured, if not you would not know if he is indeed sterile. Second you say his type 1 is poorly controlled. Is this because it is a difficult case, or is he not serious about controlling it. If the latter is correct then you must help him before he begins to lose limbs, his eyesight, kidneys and his life. You may want to think about this before you get married.
As you are a nurse, you would appreciate that the disease, other associated risk factors (hypertension) and their treatments can cause erectile dysfunction which may be a cause for infertility. Secondary infertility that is. Primary infertility can occur in anyone and many occur in a diabetic. So, male infertility can primary or secondary to type I DM or the treatments he may be on.
