General Advice About Renal Colic

Renal colic is the name given to a type of pain due to obstruction of the kidney system. It is very painful. It may come on extremely rapidly – often with no or little warning.

Essentially the ureter is the drainage channel between the kidney and the bladder. When this is stretched, it can stimulate nerve fibres which is interpreted as pain. If stretched the smooth muscle fibres will tighten up on their own.

Often it occur for no know cause. Sometimes a stone or blood clot is found to be the offending article.

About 1 in 10 men will experience it and it is about 3 times as common for men than woment to experience the pain of renal colic.

If you experience this sudden pain get help from your local renal unit quickly. You will need to be given sufficient pain relief to be health. A recent Cochrane review has suggested that intramsuscular voltarol may be the most approriate medical management. An anti vomiting medicine may also be helpful.

If the medical treatment does not work you may need to be admitted for more intensive therapy.

They may simply watch you, perhaps put you on an iv drip but will be considering if there is a surgical therapy needed, such as inserting a drainage – bypass – tube inside your ureter. Sometimes a vibration therapy may be all that is needed. Sometimes, it is possible to use keyhole surgery
